Comes a Circus

Clowns are supposedly All Smiles but, if you know them well enough, you learn there are tears hiding underneath. All wear masks; a clown is no different though expectations are.

Poem Artwork

Up, down comes merry-go-round sounds.
Elephants, tigers and clowns
sweet calliope sounds,
in a lot of big towns …
comes a circus
(with a purpose)
chasing all tears.

Up, down comes merry-go-round sounds.
Acrobats on trapeze,
contortionists who squeeze,
dogs with fantasy fleas.
Under a tent
(with quarters spent)
applause and cheers.

Up, down comes merry-go-round sounds.
There’s fear, sorrow, in clowns
(those things hide upside down).
They must SMILE! It’s profound
with their ‘smile’ wiped
(give up their hype)
they’re actors, dears.

Up, down comes merry-go-round sounds.
The performers party
on junk, foods hearty.
Pitch in get hands dirty
it all comes down.
Again clowns frown
(let slide their tears).

This is so true-and well written- I have collected clowns for years and I have also collected masks because I can relate to that- can't we all.

Sandra,

Exquisite poem. Reminded me alot of the song, " Don't Cry Out Loud " Much like the clown laughing on the outside but crying on the inside. Sort of a role reversal. I guess the emotion has much to do with the mystique of the face. Throughout life clowns have been connected to every emotion but good or bad their presence have always brought a smile.

Good poem about clowns. There's some truths in this.

Ah yes I can recall the great days when the circus came to town and everybody had a ball even the sad clowns.
