Poem Artwork

The body once asked its shadow, saying,

“Recently you were walking on and now

You have stopped; a time ago you were

Just sitting and now you have risen up. . .

How is it that you’re so without stability?”

In no time the shadow replied, “I wait for

The movements of you, my dear master,

To do what I do, and you, on whom I wait,

I understand, wait further on something else

To do as that another does. So, my waiting,

Is it for the scale of you, my body-master,

Or that of something else behind your action?

How should I know why I do one thing

Following you, or do not do any other thing

Right after the object of your imitation?

Now you tell me, who truly is the shadow

But who is the shade of the shadow

Also known as the term 'penumbra?'”

The image of the shadow is one that I have wanted to pursue in poetry. I have mentioned shadows in some of my work, but not like this. Well done Alex and thought-provoking. It stirs me on to think about it more. Don't be surprised if I attempt something on my own, eventually. Thanks. John

Your shadow can never get into trouble. No shadow there. Ashiff

Me and my shadow follows me all day long, reminds me of an old song back in the 1940's or 30's

Clever. The shades teach much with unanswerable riddles, except perhaps that there are no black and white, either/or, guilty or innocent situations. We can exist, even thrive in the place between the poles.
