Poem Artwork

In a cemetery it is to kinship

That honour is given; in army, to rank;

In the neighbourhoods, to age;

In the conduct of affairs, to keen insight;

Such is the order in those great rites.

If we speak of the course to be chased in them,

And do not observe their ritual arrangement,

We violate that course as a whole. If we speak

Of the course and do not follow it diligently,

Why do we apply that name to the process?

Those whose words are thus an inversion

Of the proper course or in opposition to it,

Are only fit to be ruled by others --

How can they rule other men themselves?

Elections, competitors, numbers, campaigns,

With all the minutiae of jurisprudence,

It is by these that inferiors serve their superiors;

It is not by them that those superiors

Nourish the world before, not after getting their post.

A firm reminder that the seeking of power is fraught with many blind corners to turn. Would that we could see, acknowledge, embrace the simplicity of heart and mind we're all capable of, oh so much more could we realize joy and if not happiness, at least contentment with finding out who we are as individuals, save the ingrained methods of aggression we're so handily hardwired for.

As suggested in this poem, we are living in an era when we need to recognize the "signs of the times" and the "signs of the end." One of the "signs of the end" is when the inferior will rule over the superior, and in simple parlance when children are telling the parents what they should do and not listening to them. We are in the middle of that era now and it needs to play out, to disastrous consequences no doubt. John

A keen insight as well as an indictment (or simply a recognition?) of ignorance that results from inattention. But are the superiors any better because they nourish the world (power)before, not after controlling it? Or is power itself the illusion and everyone is equally ignorant?
As usual, you provoke thinking, Alex. Maybe, even, understanding.
