This poem was written to express my thoughts about snow, Christmas, and my sister-in-law, Donna Mae.

Snowflakes, Christmas, and Donna Mae

It’s snowing.
Not much, but enough
to tickle my senses
with thoughts of Christmastime.
If this were sixty years ago,
I would gaze out the frosty window
of my trouble-free rural home
and envision God sprinkling
Ivory Flakes from a blue box,
dotting the pine trees with white.
Cardinals now flitter about,
perching themselves on delicate twigs
as if they, too, are excited
about the coming snow and Christmas.
Scientists tell me that each flake
is dissimilar, and I suppose
I will have to believe what they say,
for they are the experts, not I.
Still, it causes me to wonder
about such things and how they know.
As I watch the flakes drift
to all the places they finally decide to land,
my thoughts turn to my sister-in-law,
Donna Mae, and how she cherished Christmas.
I ask myself,
How could anyone instill

the joy of decorating a tree, simply

by the way she draped shimmering icicles

over snow-sprayed boughs?

But that was Donna.
She turned everything she looked at, smelled, heard, tasted, or felt

into delight of some kind.
She was matchless in countless ways.
I speak of Donna in days gone by,
for she has graduated to the place
where unlike snowflakes are created
and Christmas lasts forever.
Farewell, Donna Mae,
my sister-in-law and friend.
We shall miss you during this moment in time and all the Christmases yet to come.
But I will fix my eyes on all the pretties
decorating our tree, touch the
sparkling snowflakes, and think of you—
smiling and taking incalculable pleasure
in it all.

Reviews of "Snowflakes, Christmas, and Donna Mae"

Very touching and beautiful, like the first fallen snow or the look of a well decorated and well lit Christmas tree seen for the very first time. Your words of Donna Mae remind me of my mother's careful husbandry of the Christmas decorations and how she picked every icicle clean every year and wrapped them back up in the same package they came in to decorate the tree of the same beautiful way the coming year. I am scanning her meticulous recipes gathered over 70 years right now to post. One of those recipes is attributed to "Sue." My mother always gave credit to those who gave her the recipes. Fortunately, my mother is still alive to see the results of my work on my website soon. I will make sure that my sister shows her.

Based on what you written, Donna Mae was a joy in your life. I didn't see Sue much, but when I did, she was every much as I portrayed in her poem.

Wonderful! This is the kind of writing I love. The images this lovely poem conjures up for me is just magical..

Donna Mae sounds a lovely lady too...and her memory lives on in your timeless words.

Reading your poems is like Christmas again for me!

Best wishes, Diana

What a beautiful tribute, full of love and warm sincere compassion and fond memories. You have a kind soul and heart my fellow appalachian. I enjoyed this very much, made me sad...but the thougth of your sister inlaw graduating to the place where snowflakes are created made me smile as well as remind me of our purpose...to live a good life, serve God and make Heaven our home. Happy holidays to you and your family.
Blessings from Kentucky,
Joyce Bowling
