Misting the Ferns for Keith

Every other day when I water the roots of my hanging ferns and mist their luscious green fronds, I think about my brother-in-law, Keith and his brief words of wisdom.

Misting the Ferns for Keith

I once stood behind a woman
In the checkout line at Walmart.
In her hand she held a pathetic little flower.
The line was long, so I assume, out of boredom,
She turned to me and remarked,
If you wanna kill a flower, just give it to me.
From what I could tell, she didn't have far to go.
I knew how she felt, for flowers are doomed
When placed in my protective care.
There is, however, one exception to
My duty as the Grim Reaper of flowers; that is,
I could come close to winning next year's coveted
Title as President of The American Fern Society.
Of course, that's my opinion and pure hogwash.
But jesting aside, my ferns are pleasing to the eye.
And it's all because of my brother-in-law, Keith.
He had a fern I'll call a prize winner perched
Luxuriantly on a stand in his living room.
When I commented about its beauty, he simply
Added, Ferns like to be misted. Ever since then,
I water and mist my outside beauties every
Other day. And like all the other crazies who
Do it, I talk to them as well. Does it hurt?
Keith is gone now, but my ferns continue to thrive.
Whenever I care for them, I always think of him.
Is there something so simple that others will look at
When I'm gone and remember me?  I wonder.

So good to see you posting again. Your lovely story poem, generated a lot of thoughts in my mind, not about Keith, but about the care of plants.

I was in my 30s before I left dingy lightless apartments for a little cottage on Cheat Lake. My WVU secretary gave me a small pot with ivy in it. With little care except watering once a week, that Ivy never grew very much but it lasted 25 years through several residences until I had my newly hired helper take over its care. She promptly over watered and fertilized it and it died, along with several other plants that I had kept alive long after they were supposed to expire like some begonias I had kept for five years by bringing them inside in the wintertime.

Since then, she has become the consummate plant grower and even planted a fern that has grown into a huge specimen in front of my redwood fence where she declares, "There's too many tree roots and nothing will grow!" That fern never gets misted, sometimes gets over watered and needs a few companions to make a beautiful embellishment of my redwood fence.

I miss that little ivy plant plant, though… Along with that lakeside cottage.

This is a lovely write. We all have our stories of how certain thing will bring memories of someone back to us. I have a niece that died young and certain things that she used to say and do will remind me of her and her beautiful smile and her joy in life,

hug
