Having to Deal With Change
For seventy-three years I've stood behind
And let others have their say.
I was never the type to be unkind—
Sorta raised the old fashioned way.
Lately my world has turned upside down.
Not a thing’s like it used to be.
It's getting to where I'm coming unwound
And so angry sometimes I can't see.
Each time of the day, when the TV’s turned on,
I sit with eyes glued to the screen.
We’re kept up-to-date with ISIS and Iran.
It seems not much good can be seen.
The many hotspots on this earth where we live
Keep our citizens all tied up in knots.
Sometimes I wonder how much must we give
To counter the terrorists’ plots.
Babies conceived out of passion and need
All too often are ripped from the womb.
So passion and need that joined egg with the seed
Has now cast the dead to the tomb.
I long for the days when I as a child
Experienced the times of postwar.
When folks could lie down and rest for a while
Without anyone minding the door.
I'm a patriot at heart, and I love my flag.
I'm a bleeder of red, white, and blue.
May I always defend, perhaps even brag
About this land so precious and true .

Your verse about the unborn babies is stark and terrible, but true. I could go on, but you have done a masterful bit of writing, so I will only say Well Done: I agree!

I hope that isn't happening to you. I clearly remember the idealism of the young people during this 1960s that was hated by their elders who had just barely survived the Great Depression followed closely by a world war. All they wanted was security. But the youngsters told them otherwise. Makes me recall the folksong, “Turn, turn for every purpose under heaven.”
