As I sit at home and ponder how our world has changed dramatically, I realize I was born in 1943 but have 2020 vision.
An Unwelcome Visitor
Am I dreaming?
It seems I’m in a place
I have never been before.
For if I had,
I’m sure I would have remembered.
I can no longer do the things
I once felt free to do.
Even the language is different—
almost unintelligible.
Is this because of masks
muffling words I once knew?
This used to be a friendly place.
But no one speaks anymore.
Everyone moves about aimlessly
as if they know nor care not
where they are going.
I suppose everyone has an opinion.
I hope I am allowed to have mine.
I have a different response than Ron’s about comparing yesteryear to this present time. Aging myself, I find reflection of past life comforting, bringing into mind places, people, and happenings that were so very positive, to overlay upon current incongruities. Along with your last four words: “And so, I wait…..”. — so do I, David. Meanwhile, remembering the good ol’ days feels pretty good — no wonder lots of elders do it. ~~ djl

difficult, especially as we get
older, change always is...and it effects
our psyche’s...
However at this point in 2021 things
are improving, and there is light at
the end of the tunnel...let’s hope
for better days ahead...
Your poem is a clear indication of aging. It won't get any better, unless you release all of those old thoughts and think ahead for a change. All indications are that the world is much better than it was in 1943 in the midst of a murderous world war with millions dead.
We are actually handling the virus plaguing us far better than we did in 1919, 100 years ago. Treatments and vaccinations are being created in record time all around the world. There is worldwide cooperation among medical professionals. And people of color have taken advantage of new technology clearly pointing out their plight to the rest of us once again to have it obliterated once and for all from the thoughts of the ignorant.
Language is richer for the new words. As a poet you should be using them to create new, unique poetry rather than just complaining that things aren’t like they used to be. They're better.
I'm not sure if we'll ever know normal again. We are living in a world (at least here in the states) that is full of doom and gloom and despair. And like you, I wait.
Sometimes I wonder what the young ones are thinking inside their heads, or do they think at all.
So sad to see the young ones in Hong Kong who fought for their freedom but only to lose their battles to Beijing's communism.
Yet, the young ones in America are fighting to lose their freedom. Something that I hardly can understand. May God help the little ones to have better vision of their future.
WHAT A BIBLICAL REVELATORY TIME WE ARE LIVING IN!!! I MEAN...EVERYTHING THAT IS HAPPENING GOD, IN HIS WORD, HAS PREPARED US FOR; HE SAID THERE WOULD BE TRIBULATIONS, BUT NOT TO WORRY BECAUSE HE HAS ALREADY OVERCOME THEM(JN 16:33). HE TOLD US THAT ABSOLUTELY NOTHING COULD SEPARATE US FROM HIS LOVE(THAT IS, HIS COVERING & HIS PROTECTIVE CARE)NOT EVEN DISTRESS...PERIL...OR OTHERWISE(ROM 8:35-39). AND WE CERTAINLY ARE EXPERIENCING THE TRUTHFULNESS OF HIS WORD. HE ALSO TOLD US THAT THE JUST SHALL LIVE BY FAITH(HABAK 2:4 & 3:17-19). CERTAINLY ALL BELIEVERS ARE PILGRIMS ON OUR WAY TO OUR ETERNAL HOME BUT, DAVID, YOU ARE NOT A VISITOR! THIS IS YOUR EARTHLY HOME, YOU ARE WHERE GOD WANTS YOU TO BE...WHERE HE PLACED YOU AND WATCHES OVER YOU, UNTIL HE REMOVES YOU.
