Have you Ever had this Goofy Thought -
Of what You’d Be - if you Ought -
To have Chosen Different Paths?
Different Wroughts and Haths?
“Two Roads Converged in a Wood …”
We were Poor, so I Chose Not to Attend -
Mount Saint Joseph’s High School -
To Spare my Parents Scrimping - Was I the Fool?
Instead of Southern High School -
Would I have gotten ‘The Call’
From a Parochial School - Became a Priest -
Instead? That I Would Have Dread!
At Age Sixteen, Mrs. Gross -
In Math - she thought I was the Most!
Wanted me to Apply at M.I.T. -
But Boston was Too Far for Me!
A Rambling Wreck, from Mass Tech -
And a Helluva Engineer -
Would I have Designed Something Great?
Thoughts like These - Bear a Heavy Weight!
At Twenty, as I embarked on my First Plane -
Off - to Fort Knox, Kentucky -
Down to Basic - Was I Insane?
Instead - What if I had Married Sweet Sue?
Would I have had Different Kids?
With Different Names -
A House on the Water -
Staked Other Claims?
But, as Fate would Have It -
I Married Another -
She was Actually Great -
And So was her Mother!
What If - I had Stood my Ground -
Not Been a Wuss?
Instead of “Yes Dear, Yes Dear”
Had Made More Fuss?
Less Debt - Less Moving -
One Home Paid For - Sooner -
R.V. in the Driveway -
A Happier Honey-Mooner?
What Could I have Done?
What Did I Lack?
Could Have Had a Continental -
Or Maybe Even a - Cadillac?
Who Can I Blame -
Who Can I Thank -
Isn’t it a Shame -
No Money in the Bank!
What About Jobs?
So Many Employers -
A Different Career?
More and More Explorers?
Should I go Right?
Should I Go Left?
Which Way to Turn?
To Not Be - Bereft?
Where Could I have Traveled?
What were my Druthers?
Instead of Two Sisters -
What if they were Older Brothers?
Could It have Made a Difference?
Who Could Know?
What If - What If -
Life’s Tides - The Ebb and Flow!
Suppose I had Started -
At a Younger Age -
To Seek Out My Muse -
Or to Walk the Stage?
Could I have Been an Actor?
And - a Singer - No Less!
Rich - and Famous -
Oh - To Have Been - So Blessed!
But - Back to Reality -
Back to the Future -
When Seriously Injured -
It May Require a Suture!
Apply Some Liniment -
Or Maybe Astringent?
A Band-Aid or Bandage -
Be Happy - Even Though Indigent!
Surely - Druthers May be Dreaming -
Druthers May be a Waste of Time -
But - I have Stated My Druthers -
And Did So - All In Rhyme!
Uh, Oh. Your Druthers have awakened our Ed Godfather Brother - do you really owe him a zillion bucks? YIKES! (But if you're real lucky, he'll send Jersey Ed to collect, and you can always bribe him.)
Hi Tom, Thank you for sharing a reflection that most of us have. Well, my druthers changed along the way for unknown reasons, and changed as often as my underwear! But, life is life, and I've come to think that druthers may be a waste of time, so I go without.
A suture you need,
Applied to your leaking brain,
And if you call yourself handsome,
You really should see a shrink,
As you really are going completely, totally & utterly insane...
And it all rhymed quite nicely too! I don't think this is about changing the past, I think it's more of a reflection of those 'other roads' that could have been taken. I think, we all think about that at one time or another. Enjoyed!
