Skeleton Key
By John Herlihy

Sometimes an item of utter triviality
Can highlight what the world will portend.
We live comfortably in a world of duality,
A hard, fleeting world that will finally end.

Early morning dew drops moisten the rose;
An annoying fly insists on tickling my nose.
We now communicate at the speed of light;
Why then does everyone seem out of sight?

Time simply passes and nothing stays the same;
If we miss the moment, we have ourselves to blame.
Some people embrace any change for its novelty;
Others wish things stayed the same for continuity.

One thing is for sure; it will all come to an end,
As abrupt and final as all the money we spend.
The lights will go out and utter darkness will prevail;
We will wish and hope no longer, our dreams veiled.

Enter then the sublime notion of a world without end,
A world of higher making where there is no pretend,
Not a world of the senses that simply meets the eye,
But a world of inner beatitude where we know why.

Some people live their lives as if redemption is automatic;
Others live their lives as a challenge that is symptomatic,
Of an unforgiving world that will hurl us into the abyss,
Into the deep dark void of oblivion with its death kiss.

But no, I chose to believe in the world to come,
A world of blessing perfectly suited to everyone.
A world for the soul to enjoy the fruits of its fulfillment,
Body, mind and heart to work in peaceful contentment.

Show me this other world that our vision can see,
The kind of world we would like the world to be.
I will give up my ghosts and my enduring fantasy,
For a world whose door opens with a skeleton key.

Leave it to Ron to unlock the door of the poem with his own skeleton key. John

Some very deep beliefs and feelings expressed very well. I like how you use the "Skeleton" key to represent your physical skeleton upon death allowing you to enter this other world that you so fervently believe in.

That would be wonderful, but I'm banking on what I'm doing right now as one of the best things that I will ever do and it certainly is heavenly. In other words: it doesn't get any better than this.

Such a fine write! I remember using a skeleton key. It would open many doors in the house! If only we possessed the skeleton key that would open the door to the future just to get a peek! Enjoyed!

Love ya!

A beautiful poem with a perfect ending, to which I could add, "me too."

while reading this wonderful poem, I think of the grand ancients who drawn their 'primitive' sketches on the walls of their caves. . . that was not about hunting, as some scholars used to say, but the desire to fix the grace of bison and deer's postures and movements. The line made by a piece of coal -- that is the skeleton key of all the ancient and modern arts. Cheers, alex

We all cling to our beliefs whether fact or fiction . . . I am no different in that regard, my belief takes on the wonderment of reincarnation.

You and I see things in much the same way. I, too, believe in "A world of blessing perfectly suited to everyone." I guess I also believe in reincarnation and karma. There are lessons we must all master on our way to enlightenment and, to me, enlightenment is the attainment of that "world of blessing..."

Enjoyed this very much!

Rebecca
