No Farewell
By John Herlihy

The worst farewell is the no farewell;
You just left when you no longer wished to stay.
The worst good-bye is the no good-bye;
You just vanished in this cruel, inhuman way.

As if what we had meant nothing at all;
As if what we had never existed at all.
One day your presence there, taken for granted;
The next day your absence there, no longer granted.

Your fault, your actions often lacked wit;
My fault, a suit I wore that never truly fit.
No one’s fault, a reaction that refuses to sit;
Everyone’s fault, we have fallen into a fiery pit.

My heart an empty cave where something has died;
My heart made of stone where no emotion survived.
Let’s forget about this, now and every night thereafter;
To remember means nothing but misery ever after.

Whereas once your eyes glittered with renown,
Eyes now overshadowed with the face of a frown.
Whereas once your hand and mine intertwined,
My hand now idle and empty, mine only mine.

No farewell will endure by no remembering,
Enter ye then the realm of eternal forgetting.
Like having a piece of the night in one’s heart,
Now fallen face down its darkness to impart.

Some things are tied up, tucked away, sewn;
Some things, they are better left on their own.
I now bid you so long, fare thee well, good-bye;
I ask no more questions, and no longer wonder why.

Hi John=== You did a great job, tho I have one suggestion Go to a book
called Rhyming Dictionary by Bessie Redfield. This helped me to make rhyming music of the word. There was places you used the same word twice
rather than looking for another word that has same ryhtum with out being repeative. Keep it up may God Bless

So sad. From one who has a number of such goodbyes there are few words to describe the depth of the pain.

For far too few that there is the reality of endings of everything being truly the beginning of its cause.

the thorny path of self-cultivation leads us to the final realization: to take reality as it is, without any pros and cons, yes or no; and this piece is one of the best in your conscious repertoire in the way, John. Cheers, alex

NO MATTER HOW MANY RELATIONSHIPS WE HAVE HAD IN OUR LIVES THERE IS ALWAYS 'ONE' THAT STANDS OUT FROM THE REST. IT'S THE ONE WITH THE 'NO FAREWELL' MEMORY THAT FLOATS IN THE WINDOW, OUT OF NOWHERE, WITH A FAMILIAR PASSING AROMA OR ON THE STRANDS OF A HARDLY HEARD MELODY. AND IT DOESN'T MATTER WHO WAS RIGHT OR WHO WAS WRONG BECAUSE IN THE END IT'S THE WORDS OF THAT OLD CLICHE', WHICH HAS TENDED AND MENDED SO MANY HEARTS, THAT STILL STANDS RESOUND AND TRUE; 'BETTER TO HAVE LOVED AND LOST THEN NEVER TO HAVE LOVED...AT ALL'. WELL DONE, JOHN, THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

As did Ron, I missed the lost love in this, but either way it is still a sad memory of sorts...-e-

I didn't see lost love in this until I read the other comments. I saw it as a much larger loss of identity when we lose this life. Most will not be remembered beyond their family and friends. And those will not be remembered a couple of generations later.

I guess that's why so many seek a heavenly resting place or reincarnation so they can continue their lives without all the encumbrances of failed relationships.

One clear way to make history is to become famous or infamous, either by chance or by design. I would rather be known for the good I did rather than the bad.

We try to think with our head,
but we're ruled by our heart.
The pains of lost love linger,
and tears our heart apart.

You gave much credence to a lost love. I imagine many will concur.
