Of all the nights that may hold us ever in thrall,
This has been the most perfect night of them all.
Across the years, I never thought it would come,
Hardships made known at night when they befall.
Adversity visits the night always added to the sum;
Sadness finds refuge in night comparable to none.
This night a miracle that has earned its wonder;
The dreams of eternal starlight and all its plunder.
At first, I see a plate of darkness as thick as night,
Not a sound to be heard, everything out of sight.
Not a hush, not a whisper, even silence in accord,
With fearsome darkness that such nights afford.
Some nights seem unendurable and never end;
Other nights pass away that time’s arrows send.
In the mystery of the night, centuries may pass;
Time loses immediacy and seems eternal, alas.
Or the hours pass quick, the night never truly lasts;
It slips thru our fingers like sand and then departs.
The moon steals darkness from the heart of night,
Dispensing rays of moon glow to soften all fright.
The blue sea is now black to reflect outer space;
Wave crests capture starlight as it falls in a race.
The stars themselves appear every night of the year.
If they never appeared, we would indeed shed a tear.
One night I hope at whose door day never arrives;
One perfect night of eternal awakening that survives.
The stars perpetuate the myth of the eternal night;
The moon forever full and never very far from sight.
This is the most perfect night I have ever known;
The one night of my life I need never to bemoan.

I use a sound machine I got many years ago using the ocean or a thunderstorm to put and keep me asleep but it still takes me so long to get to that point, sometimes I feel its better to just stay up all night and sleep at whatever point it does come...-e-
A good nights sleep is a precious thing. When I can't sleep at night, I listen for a train as one runs a couple of times during the evening from the Morton Salt mine. I imagine I'm on that train sleeping in a boxcar and I fall asleep. Weird, eh? But, it works and I'm soon sleeping like a baby.
You have written about everything that could be said about night. For most of us, much of night has been banished by electric light. We are far removed from the time when there was no electricity and only fires lit up the blackness of night. And, we don't appreciate night for what it does for us and for so many of our fellow living creatures who find that the night is their time to be active. As for me, I've enjoyed all the night has to offer for much of my life. And always was grateful to be able to close my eyes and sleep during a time when it was dark rather than trying to sleep with the lights on or during the daytime.
Those kind of nights are few and far between, so when they come they are very special for sure. I've had my share, especially since I've made my home in Thibodaux, Louisiana.
I had many perfect night's while living and working in Yellowstone. Beautiful, clear, silent night's but for the occasional yip of a coyote or howl of a wolf. Magic! Rebecca
