Our Feelings
By John Herlihy

Yellow, green, black and blue,
Our feelings reveal their various hue.

Adrift, I float on a vast sea of love,
Bereft, I witness the flight of a passing dove.

At a loss, I reach out for your hand,
At a cost, I courageously take a stand.

Confused, I cannot take the next step,
Amused, when I may take a misstep.

Saddened, when I feel betrayed,
Maddened, when I feel dismayed.

Floating like a feather, I do not mind,
Hearing, like a person who is blind.

Disappointed, when you declined support,
Anointed, when you offered a kind retort.

Joyous, like a child without a care,
Piteous, like an orphan in despair.

Lustful, when our desires run afoul,
Unforgiving, when revenge begins to howl.

Expectant, if I have dreams to seek,
Reluctant, if I have secrets to keep.

Burdened, when I have suffered defeat,
Determined, when I any success meet.

Peaceful, when I look into your eyes,
Mournful, when I see your demise.

Resented, when I am misunderstood,
Contented, to be alone under a hood.

Our moods and feelings color who we are,
They rudely invade when our door lies ajar.

I agree with Ron on this magnificent work of poetry at its best.

WORLD CONDITIONS ARE AT ITS WORST AND IT'S SO TRUE, NONE IS UNTOUCHED, EVERYONE'S 'FEELINGS' ARE BOUNDING HERE AND THERE...ALL OVER THE PLACE! THAT'S WHY WE MUST LEAN ON 'THE ROCK OF AGES', HE IS OUR ANCHOR...IN TIMES LIKE THESE. THANKS FOR SHARING A GREAT POETICAL WORK. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

Our thoughts and feelings bring color and depth to our lives. I wouldn't say, "rudely invade," but pleasantly invade. Life would be cold and heartless without the interference of our feelings and ideas.

The states of emotion very well defined and delivered in beautiful poetic form.

I think you colored,
just about everything.
I think now I'll go,
and dig out my mood ring.

Yep. Colors have a lot to do in describing our feelings, for sure. Not least of all is . . . I feel as black as midnight sin.

I don't think you realize how well these lines describe, and emulate, the world as experienced by those with bipolar disorder. Gratefully I am a type 2 and considered high functioning but I still ride the winds of emotion. Sometimes those winds are low, dragging along an arid ground but other times high like a bird, even a bird of prey. Either way its one wild ride!
