Simple pieties have served us long and well,
Far longer, in fact, than anyone could tell.
They come all dressed up for any occasion,
To serve our needs with a simple persuasion.
They say: Turn the other cheek, eat humble pie,
If nothing else, they draw attention to the sky.
Become as little children and honor thy mother,
This only the purely evil-hearted could smother.
We invoke these simple pieties to bring good luck,
We need these sweet nothings when lost in muck.
We listen to unholy accusations arise from earth,
Sounds murmur their protestations since our birth.
Hard truths rise up from the earth totally unbidden
Soaring forth as spears of light, unveiled, unhidden.
I had to look up "Pieties" and I really enjoy poems that have words that I don't know the meaning of and have to look it up, as it were. Seems an interesting concept that we all should follow or at least look into...-e-
The pious avoid temptations. We are forgiven in our baptism. I guess it's all in how one looks at it. I will be reading this one a few more times for sure!
FOR ME, THIS ONE COVERS THEM ALL; UNLESS WE BECOME AS LITTLE CHILDREN WE CANNOT ENTER THE KINGDOM OF GOD. A LOT 'SELF' TO GIVE UP THERE, BUT SO MUCH MORE TO GAIN...IM STILL LEARNING, FOREVER. THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS.
If you tend to believe romantic, passionate, masculine poetry is a thing of past eras, read "She Intrigues Me," and be swept away in the beautiful craft of a contemporary poet of love.
Love ya!
