We go on to become doctors, professors and potentates,
Collecting experience and wealth to amply fill up our plates.
There is no limit to everything that we in our lives desire,
Money, fame, success and a love that sets our hearts on fire.
We leave no stone unturned in pursuing all that we want,
We stick to our guns no matter how much others may taunt.
If the race is there to be done, then we do it so we may win;
If flattery and esteem we aspire, we resort to tall tales to spin.
But nothing, I mean nothing, can truly approach and compare
To the sacred treasures of certain childhood memories, I swear.
I remember the first time that I saw the sweet fall of snow,
Thunder-struck, in awe, the glory of all I might ever know.
I remember the dazzling light of my first Christmas tree,
Mystery, enchantment, and beauty I thought I would never see.
I remember the first time that my cheek was ever kissed,
Kissed by another 12-year-old, a little girl who I always missed.
I remember my first ice skates, I asked for soon after I could talk,
With siblings on a frozen swamp, ice skating before I could walk.
I remember the first time that I saw New York in all its glory,
The city became a part of me, vital to my post-graduate story.
But there is one treasured childhood memory I will never forget,
A memory that will always soothe me whenever I may feel upset.
The sheer delight that filled my heart like cream in a hostess twinkie;
There it lay in a small unpretentious box, my beloved gift, a slinky.
Nothing could compare to the perfect symmetry of its spiral circles,
Glittering in the light of the darkened night in sparkling whirlpools.
Held aloft in my two pudgy little hands, it became the slithering snake,
Moving back and forth in a kind of perpetual motion only I could make.
Then, the most glorious miracle I had ever witnessed in the world at all;
The magical toy marched alone down the steps as I watched enthralled.
WEREN'T THEY JUST GREAT?! YES, I ENJOYED THE ERA OF SLINKIES BUT NOTHING, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WAS BETTER THAN MY TWINKIES. I STILL HAVE ALL MY TEETH(MINUS THE WISDOMS) AND I HAVE TO ATTRIBUTE THAT TO THE FACT THAT 'SWEETS', OF ANY KIND, WERE A SELDOM ENJOYED TREAT IN MY FORMATIVE YEARS. SO WHEN I DID GET SOME I REMEMBERED AND TREASURED THE TASTE FOREVER. I GREW UP WITH THIS HABIT OF NOT HAVING SWEETS, WHICH I AM GRATEFUL THAT I ACQUIRED BUT WITH THE ADVANCEMENT OF AGE...I DO SOMETIMES OVER 'INDULGE'. I DON'T KNOW WHAT MADE ME GO THERE I GUESS IT WAS THE LINE ABOUT THE TWINKIES. THANKS FOR SHARING THIS LOVELY WRITE. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS
sweet memories of childhood. My favorites were my Lionel train set, and my one speed Schwinn bicycle. They both took me places. One imaginary, and one for real.
This poem is so filled with wonderful childhood remembrances similar to mine. Although I knew my mother worked very hard to make some of those magic experiences happen for my brother and I.
We didn't have money to chase all those fads that came along, including the Slinky. I do recall playing with one though… Probably not ours, but a friend or relatives. It was a good lesson in economics because I don't follow fads today either, saving lots of money buying stuff that might be enjoyable for a few times but eventually becomes that volcanic lava lamp that you can't get rid of.
Nonetheless, the Slinky certainly is a marvelous physics lesson like my Pa-Ding Swinger.
You and I both, John. We have remembrances of our childhood toys. Mine were the plastic soldiers. I fought many a battle, not losing even one. That was when I would allow slinky to parade over the vanished enemy soldiers. It was much later that I realized the plastic soldiers were being used for conditioning for future "real" future battles.
Ha. I loved that invention for a while. When you set them up just right they would walk down stairs. That tickled me for weeks. Enjoyed these memories of your life, John. Peace... r
I might be giving away my age but I remember it too John. In that little two story house on St. Michel, where I grew up, we played with it for hours my brother sister and I. Thank you for the memories dear heart, you got a good mind, have a great day, John
