The Passage of Love
By John Herlihy

Still unloved, ever so unloved,
Fledgling stub in a winter garden.

Unexpected love, every so unexpected,
Like ripe fruit, breaking then falling.

New-found love, ever so new-found,
A bird, in sight of the land at sea.

Little love, ever so little,
With the white feathers of a dove.

Simple love, ever so simple,
Mutual giving, no doubts, only gladness.

Adventurous love, ever so adventurous,
Mountains and valleys, a trek momentous.

Growing love, ever so growing,
A delicate weave in color glowing.

Profound love, ever so profound,
The light of stars that reach earthly ground.

Lost love, ever so lost,
The memory terrible in its intensity, its cost.

I have loved, oh have I loved,
The fog of memory brings to old men a magic spell.

Farewell love, forever farewell,
In my heart, you will always dwell.

THERE ARE SO MANY DIFFERENT KINDS OF LOVE, JOHN, BUT I AM ASSUMING THAT YOU'RE SPEAKING FROM A INTIMATE PERSPECTIVE AND FROM THAT POINT OF VIEW I CAN ADMIT THAT YOU HAVE ELOQUENTLY TOUCHED ON THE MANY DIFFERENT PHASES OF LOVE WHICH WE HAVE ALL BEEN BLESSED TO EXPERIENCE...EITHER IN ITS ENTIRETY OR PART OF. THAT OLD CLICHE', 'BETTER TO HAVE LOVED AND LOST THAN NEVER TO HAVE LOST AT ALL' HAS ALWAYS SET WELL WITH ME. THANKS FOR SHARING, MY FRIEND. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

You have beautifully rendered the phases of love that fortunately, most of us are able to go through in a lifetime. I am so grateful for those early red-hot romances and those steady loves that stabilized me. As I get older, the love by my side become stronger. Makes me feel very happy.

It's still better to have loved and lost. It's when one abandons love, that's a tragedy.

This poem is so meaningful! This reads like a love tended, grown and enjoyed, One leaving. One mourning. Excellent!

Love ya!

yes, this piece is very very interesting with displaying the fact that we're all in love forgetting of that until becoming out of it. We talk or think about it at the very moment we're out of it to call 'all we need is love' because it is our essence to be within its embrace. there are two dimensions shown in this piece, and that's why I love it. Cheers, alex
