The Lover Unloved
By John Herlihy

Always the lover, never the loved one,
Always seeking the web heaven spun.
Starved of human warmth, affection,
Lost in fear of a permanent rejection.
Any bit of desire to be taken as love,
Any passing bird imagined as a dove.
Loving is easy, unloved feels rejection,
A one-way street becomes reflection.
His tender heart always felt aching,
The unloved heart burns forsaking.
His ability to love dithered and dried,
His desire to love withered and died.
Giving expects the blossom to bloom,
Being unloved is but an empty room.
Loving overflows of the cup of heart,
Unloved drains away and pulls apart.
Love is a tension strung taut, tight,
Mutual giving essential to feel right.
Even if nobody in the world cared,
His loving heart willing to be shared.
Being unloved a condition unwilled,
I did love, he sighed, feeling fulfilled.

SO OFTEN, WHOM THE UNLOVED LOVES, DOESN'T LOVE THEM, BUT THEN...WHO LOVES THE UNLOVED, THE UNLOVED DON'T LOVE. SO HERE IT IS AGAIN, JOHN...'BETTER TO HAVE LOVED AND LOST THEN NEVER TO HAVE LOVED AT ALL...' AND REMEMBER...IT'S NOT OVER...UNTIL IT'S OVER. THANKS FOR THE SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

Yes! "I did love,". I did know real lusty mad love. I can say I knew it. I did feel fulfilled. Wow! Can I relate to this poem!!

Love ya!

Another example of paradox and its power to give meaning to the idea that for every plus, there's a minus necessary to fully appreciate the plus. The subject of love will continue to lure the writer, but few will ever break out of the Hallmark lockstep that very seldom rises above the toddler understanding. You've chosen here to place a greater responsibility for love's continual challenge with those who are willing to allow the gains with the loses, the tears with the laughter, and most importantly, "...I did love, he sighed, feeling fulfilled."

'His tender heart always felt aching'---- Aching heart and being unloved is the PRICE of writing POEMS, which live forever. Who wants to know anything about Black Lady from Shakespeare's sonnets? But Shakespeare's name will live forever. Words from your tender, aching, unloved heart will live FOREVER and this Happiness is biger than being loved!!!!!!!!!! Liana Margiva

Substitute she and her and you could well be writing about me. A forlorn and lonely poem that touches the heart.

This is a step away from your usual world of order
and perspicuity. But you have shown us the darker side
of love without being overbearing about it. Excellent write!

A lingering melancholy in this piece. The image undergirds your lament well. Thanks. r

We all want to be loved, but far to often we end up in empty, loveless relationships. Is it really better to have loved and lost, than to never have loved at all?

A very sad and mournful piece. Perhaps autobiographical. I find that the unloved often just try too hard. Once one relaxes and begins to love themselves for what they really are, others find it much easier open their hearts to love as well.

'Always the lover,

This is what matches your image above. Such a great poetry in this two lines, . . of beginning and end. Cheers, alex

This one is a sad refrain of broken hearts. Love. It cannot be wished upon us. Likewise it is impossible to "make" someone we love to return that love, thus making a circle of love.
