Who the Day Belongs To
By John Herlihy

Who does the day belong to?
The day’s dawn belongs to infants,
Who awaken, breathe, laugh, and cry,
Into the blue of the open, benevolent sky.
The day’s morning belongs to adolescents,
The sounds of morning, suddenly alive,
Raucous, playful, happy to live and thrive.
The day’s noontime belongs to the mature,
The meridian of one’s life, feeling secure,
Past gone, future waits, the present endures.

The day’s eventide belongs to the aging,
The twilight sun descends humbly in prayer,
The bones aching but the mind as soothsayer.
The day’s night belongs to the old and dying,
The wind still blows but can be heard sighing,
Until first light kills night with sun’s eye prying.
Then the day returns to us out of the deep blue,
Helping us to remember all that we ever knew.
The glorious day belongs to everyone and all,
As the universe holds us completely in thrall.

The day belongs to 7+ billion souls. Without the day there wouldn't be any food for all those souls.

It was good comparing the stages of life with the stages of the day, but as I recall from my youth, the night was for carefree dancing, drinking and a little bit of that play that ended up creating all those 7+ billion souls. ;-)

I love the optimistic...

"The glorious day belongs to everyone and all,
As the Universe holds us completely in thrall."....

Each new born day holds the potential for unique
and miraculous happenings....

This line says it all in my opinion . . .

"Past gone, future waits, the present endures."

Too bad so many people refuse to allow the past to begone, living their lives with regrets.
