The Wheel of Fortune
By John Herlihy

The wheel of fortune gleams nobly and bright.
How does it turn and more importantly why?
Only ask the sober face of our ruined moon;
But do not expect a coherent, reasoned reply.

Made from the perfection of the divine circle;
Its movement ever glides on an eternal round.
They wonder mutely at its deafening silence;
The passengers dare not utter a single sound.

The ornaments of the universe adopted a circle;
Sun, moon, and stars have no edges, a miracle.
Their circular orbits contain a message to speak;
The mystery forever veiled from mighty and meek.

Yes, I sit there snug as I quietly look from on high;
The view of the world in shadows as I utter a sigh.
I soon descend downward, in dread and demeaned,
While others ascend aloft as their faces gleamed.

The wheel of fortune is but destiny envisioned,
Lives at the mercy of greater forces conditioned.
Feeble hopes tucked into our hearts for survival;
Despair suffers death at good fortune’s revival.

Riches abound as the wheel reaches great heights,
The world at our feet illuminated by Northern Lights.
But as the wheel turns, of our ruin we must beware,
As depths of the earth loom closer beyond compare.

It is one thing to be lifted aloft on feathered wings;
Our hearts in our throats as our voice heartily sings.
It is quite another to descend into dungeonous depths,
With fear mounting in our throats in frantic breaths.

The way of the world will never give clear account,
Some people unable their problems to surmount.
The wheel forever turns upward only to take a dive;
Some feel sad while others simply prosper, thrive.

The wheel of fortune will forever on its axis turn,
As long as the stars as fireflies of the night burn.
‘Regnabo’, the wheel whispers, I shall always reign,
While day follows night, bedewed with gentle rain.

Behold the angel overarching with extended wings,
Whose constant hope from the well of eternity springs.
Behold the devil in red, pointed boots, broken seams;
We must live out our lives to know what it all means.

One time when my two kids needed winter coats and school clothes (I was sole supporter.), I went shopping with money my mother had leant to me. I got everything the kids needed. They were so tickled! Anyhow, on the way out I was pulled aside by a lady who told me to spin this one big wheel. Well, I did and guess what????? The pointer stopped at "All purchases today FREE!". OMG!!! I was so happy to give my mother back her money and the kids would not be cold that winter. That was "The Wheel of Fortune" to me! 'Took me back to a nice memory, John.

Love ya!

Up until 500 years ago, all humans had to know of fortune were told by soothsayers and prophets. Most were wrong and those that were right, were trivial. That kind of either preordained or magically fixed future was the norm until only recently when modern science is rapidly discovering how everything works and can make very precise future predictions.

I have been watching One Strange Rock, outlining how there were so many amazing things that happened to our planet in its formation that made it habitable for us today. By the same token, our new technology tools settings space are determining an ever more violent and changing universe out there making our earth a possible target way before we are ready for it to happen.

That wheel of fortune passes out more that fortune during its lifespan, my friend, but in the end a good piece of mind is worth riches untold.

Your last line summed this poem up nicely. The only thing missing here is Vanna White. (sorry, I had to say it)

Such an interesting card to look at. Destiny can be a mystery revealed, towards the end when our eyes are aiming for the golden doors. Beyond the gate all will be explained one day. Thank you for your poem today. Stay inspired and keep writing . xo

You Look FatCalgary by RickthePoetWarrior

Using Calgary as a backdrop the author satirizes the self-serving nature of the public as it continues to fatten itself, not only physically, but egotistically as well.
