Shadows of a Guilty Conscience
By John Herlihy

Shadows of a guilty conscience are long and dark;
But in the folds of its darkness there lies a spark.
Beware when a guilty conscience may awaken,
Invading our good will with some fault mistaken.
Our inner sky drained of blue by overcast clouds;
Our motives questioned, now wrapped in shrouds.
To roam within our minds invisible as if not there;
To enter into the heart without invitation or care.
On silent wings, our conscience flutters and flies;
Its negativity arouses what our happiness denies.
Well-intentioned behavior often turns out wrong;
They fool us with make-believe, hollow as a gong.
Give me a guilty conscience and I give you a whim;
Forgiveness promises redemption from personal sin.

So many great comments, John. We each have our very own way to weather the slings and arrows of our very own heart. Loved this poem, my friend.

Many a well intentioned action has resulted in the wrong conclusion. Your poem illustrates how one must learn to forgive oneself for that transgression to be able to move on to better things.

A conscience is the one thing that makes us human, and a guilty conscience even more so. Cool write.

Of course you will, John. We all need constant guidance and mindfulness daily. None are immune to the human condition. Great write!

Lovely poem about the conscience. They say when it is clear we sleep like a babe, when it is not? We toss and turn struggling with ourselves. God knew what he was doing when he gave us a conscience to reckon with. As for coincidence on the theme of silence, I stopped believing in coincidence a long time ago. My life has been all about synchronicity and timing. Intervention and special ties. I think we are tied by our great passion, (writing) two souls that somehow connect through word and heart intent. Sorry for making this so long.
Hugs and affection,
