What I Miss
By John Herlihy

Yes, I miss many things in my life,
Things that vanished have become rife.
Missing an emotion akin to the dove,
Its cup simply filled with abiding love.
Oh, for the days when I still had my hair,
Now I look in a mirror and simply stare.
The red blush of my cheeks in my youth,
Now a graying pallor make me uncouth.
All the challenges yet to be met and won,
Still a final challenge yet to be overcome.
Random delight in my hopes and dreams,
Now a rainy day is precisely what it seems.
Then the endless days stretching ahead,
Now the few days left fill me with dread.
I guess I’m saying this, I miss my old self,
Those days as nothing but a carefree elf.

Perhaps we should focus on the bounty of blessings the past held, the riches of today, and O the wondrous possibilities of tomorrow.

Nice write, totally enjoyed.

We are a unique species; we survive because we change and we change so we can survive.

I guess we all have regrets for having missed things. I would like to be just a carefree elf like you have become. I am much more restrained than that and that's what I miss. The freedom to go out alone again and see what no other eyes can or will or want to see.

I might sometimes miss my youth, but I would never want to go through it again. I'm comfortable in my old age.

Sharing hopes and dreams with a person that is in their twenties or teens makes all the difference in the world.
Then you can experience that youthful spark all over again.
We have much to pass on to the younger generation for we made many mistakes along the way. Sharing experience together and spending quality time at least once a week with them is therapy for us and a guiding light for them. Amen
