WHY WE CRY
By John Herlihy

Thoughts drift to mind from a distance far,
As a well gathers light from a distant star.
Who can identify the real reason why we cry?
The sad reaction will stay with us until we die.
From a deep well emerges sorrow of the mind,
An emotive human response unique of its kind.
From there it sinks into the depths of the heart,
Ownership of emotion from which we never part.
How does the infant know of its enduring sorrow,
Crying its heart out as if there were no tomorrow?

The first sound a baby utters in the world, a cry;
The last sound to accompany the last breath, a sigh.
To begin within the eyes locked on a lasting despair;
With a profound realization life simply is not fair.
Then moves on to the nose, puffed and puckered,
Like a trick has been played and we are suckered.
Then down to the mouth, lips turned down and sad,
Locked into a pout that will never again know glad.
As emotions die, the shoulders shimmer and shake;
The body continues to react in the sorrow’s wake.

As an old man, I cry at movies, at funerals, at night;
The emotions sneak up upon me from out of sight.
Our laughter just flicks and flutters like a cat’s tail;
When we cry, it comes across as a mournful wail.
As if there does lie within me a centuries-old stone,
Carved into years of millennia as a brittle old bone.
Of children lost, of sorrow endured, loved ones gone;
The melody of their living strikes a melancholy gong.
They gather together freely within me one last time,
Universal memories that are now personal, mine.

SO MANY DIFFERENT REASONS FOR CRYING...UP, DOWN, ROUND AND ROUND, I GUESS THE BOTTOM LINE IS; IT EXPRESSES OUR DEEPEST EMOTIONS AND, WHETHER HAPPY OR SAD...A CRY...BRINGS 'RELEASE'. THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

Yes, we do cry when sad but we also cry with joy. I have shed many tears for many reasons, proving, at least for me, that tears are a universal language unique to each individual.

As we grow older our hearts become more tender and we cry more easily.
Cuz we know how precious tears can be, how strong and how cleansing. Thank you for sharing, Love and hugs

It's the emotion that plays the part and real men do cry tears when in sorrow.

Some of the most resilient men I've ever known cry. It's certainly, I feel, one of the reasons they're resilient. I cry often. Sometimes when I'm praying the tears flow. It's a marvelous cleanse. Sometimes people cry, not because of any weakness they have, but because they've been strong for too long. Enjoyed your thoughts, John. Very touching. Peace... r

Great write. I grew up in a family where the men didn't cry, so even now after all these years, I rarely shed any tears. It's just the way I was raised.

Crying is a natural emotion. I'm not very emotional, so I don't cry very often. When I do, it sneaks up on me stealthily and suddenly I find myself feeling very empathetic what it is that is causing me to cry.

Oh, how I can identify with so much in this poem, John! I've noticed that my great grandson cries when he gets hurt or when he doesn't get his way. Oh.......to only have those two things to cry about! Great poem!!! Kudos!

Love ya!

Jane
