Such a Simple Thing

By John Herlihy

My heart was once an open door.

Why do I now lay alone on the floor?

My love was such a simple thing,

Thru your door I did my heart bring.

When for you I gave myself away,

I fully expected you to linger, to stay.

Was that something too much to ask?

Did you see love as an annoying task?

That open door became a gaping hole,

When you smiled and my heart stole.

Little did I know you didn’t really care,

With no intention my feelings to spare.

As soon as the going got a little rough,

Our squabbles made love a little tough.

I thought our true love could conquer all,

Old age would meet us still in thrall.

To walk hand in hand into the sunset,

Knowing that we loved with no regret.

Never did I image my love as a myth,

The loved one as a stranger to be with.

My love was once such a simple thing,

When I flew, you were my other wing.

You once stole my heart beyond repair;

I keep my love and leave you the despair.

Wow! A great poem of heartache. I hope it isn't true but only a poem for you.

Sometimes one word can kill someones love for another, just one word! Where is the humility and sense of duty in relationships?
Everybody just live for themselves, I guess. I'm not much better.

This was so beautiful, John! But in the end you thought it would not work out and then you left. Something that we all need to do if love is gone and there's no need to linger. Rather have a beautiful memory just as it the way it was.

Great poem!

She seduced me with her body, my heart I gave away freely. When she left me you she took what was left of it.

Love is not always so simple. I can identify with a love that seemed to be going right, soundly going wrong. I got a mixed message near the end, as though you had left her, rather than the other way around. But perhaps I just read it wrong. Some great lines in this one, especially the "other wing."

I agree with Mystic on that line. It really stood out for me. There is no greater feeling than to love and be loved back. And like I tell my kids, It takes a lot of work to make a relationship work. My son in law, who remarried, thought everything was going great with them. At the beginning of the year he was diagnosed with cancer, and his wife just up and left him. He came home one afternoon, only to find a dear John letter taped to front door. He's doing better now, but it devastated him for awhile. If two people in love aren't there for the other when needed, then it wasn't really love to begin with.

"When I flew, you were my other wing." this is my favorite luminous line here. When love is real, its exactly how it feels. When we are
young we are so full of idea as we grow old we realize that the greatest gift of all is being loved indiscriminately heart and soul. So rarely does it happen that when it does and one dies, the bird is maimed. Sigh... Your poetry makes me feel. Have a good day dear John. Hugs.
