LOST FRIENDS

By John Herlihy

I make it a point to remember lost friends,

All those people that I will never see again.

My life has been a journey from west to east,

Gathering friendships I thought never to cease.

Each friend a unique person of an individual kind;

Each friend giving me a gift treasured in my mind.

Little did I know that each time I would say good-bye;

I felt a deep sorrow although I couldn’t explain why.

They disappeared from my view as I drifted far away;

As friends, we felt nearness that in distance will stray.

I hoped that I would see you in the future once again;

I never thought our lives would separate, old friend.

Where were you when I needed to say your name?

Where were you later when no one to my aid came?

In difficult times, you were not there, where were you?

Alone and lonely, where were you, you were not there.

Those lost friends are no longer near to answer a call;

Lives briefly intertwine in today’s world, then simply fall.

In brief encounter, we did meet as strangers at the start;

With the forces of destiny, no longer strangers as we part.

Where were they, I cry, but then I know where they are;

Lasting friendship deep in my heart whether near and far.

Your words ring true. Neither time or distance can keep friends from my heart and mind. We never truly forget anyone. Never. 'Enjoyed, John!

Love ya!

Not all friendships withstand the test of time or distance, but they were never made in vain.

They say that "distance makes the heart grow fonder." But I believe that old cliché is wrong. Like you, I have made friendships in the past that were quite strong, but time and distance has faded them. I know you didn't mention it, but some have died and will no longer be able to be in our lives.

I have made a point to keep track of old friends through the years. It has not been equally reciprocated. That's okay. But media like Facebook that I recently joined just to be able to see pictures from my extended family, seems to be able to rekindle connection with old friends who have not been in the picture before.

Sometimes we simply drift apart, but there's always a chance to reconnect. On the other hand, when death claims a friend, they are truly lost. years back, an old timer told me, when you're young you go to weddings and B=day parties. When you get older, you go to funerals. I have found that to be very true. Most of my friends are gone.

Where indeed were they.

Your poem speaks to me. When I came to Canada I had left a lot of my friends behind in Hong Kong. I missed them even to this date. Some I kept looking for them on the internet but couldn't find them, perhaps their last names had been changed because they've got married.

You are such a sensitive man, and I love you for that. My heart will cling to this poem cuz it contains words that I wish to express but can't. I admire you for that. Have a wonderful day dear precious friend. Whether near or far I hold you close to my heart. Always,
