THE COMFORTS OF OLD AGE

By John Herlihy

The comforts of old age can be counted on one hand,

 Future years no longer limitless, a kind of reprimand.

Whereas our restless youth had the world at its feet,

A sober old age re-awakens, the end of life to meet.

Love’s promises do tease the mind, but the heart tickle;

An old man’s mind seeks reprieve from autumn’s sickle.

The blunt edges of my blades tempered by life’s forges,

To face life’s challenges on a road thru mountain gorges.

As we age, hopes do turn into haunted ghosts with fears;

One’s dreams left by the wayside with the passing years.

All the strength and courage of youth now finally spent;

Time to give back the virtues our good fortune has lent.

The comforts of old age can be numbered as legion;

Now, vain desires dissipate in this narrowing region.

Whereas once our passions flamed and knew no limit;

Now knowledge is gained as wisdom at life’s summit.

Having accomplished much with nothing left to prove;

All the emotions now wrung out, but still on the move.

These are the days that life seems frayed at the hems;

Instead, they shine with all the luster of precious gems.

Old age provides the perfect balm for raging ambition;

My dreams are now for my children to come to fruition.

Ah yes, time takes its toll with my face full of wrinkles;

But the mercy and peace down from Heaven sprinkles.

I AGREE. ONCE ONE REACHES A CERTAIN 'AGE' IT CERTAINLY DOESN'T TAKE VERY TO COMFORT US...DOES IT? I GUESS THAT'S BECAUSE WE'VE GROWN WISE AND REALIZE; THE THINGS THAT HAVE 'REAL' MEANING AND VALUE ARE FREE AND FEW, AND...WERE ALWAYS THERE. INDEED, MERCY...PEACE...AND HIS WONDERFUL GRACE DOES SPRINKLE, LIBERALLY, ON THIS WRINKLED FACE. THANK YOU, WELL DONE! LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

As we age, our dreams turn to our children. Soon I will have my first grandchild. Maybe I will feel a rebirth of my old self. Time will tell.

I don't know about old age, the only thing I knew when my dad reached old age he was actually acting so young and strong and optimistic. To me, my dad was so strong he could do anything.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts about old age and retirement. I'm sure you too can draw some comfort and optimism out of your old age!

I love your similes and metaphors in this one… Very rich. And the whole premise of "comfort" in old age. Yes, there is comfort in retirement from the battles of occupation and work for money. When one achieves that golden age where money no longer impinges on daily life, one can pursue avocations not traveled before and enjoyable leisure rather than the rat race of accomplishment. I believe you and I have both reached that plateau before the end. May that plateau be long for both of us.

If one were to read this poem John, and not understand it premise would be a very sad situation indeed.

Old is wisdom walking. Your words say so much on so many levels, John! Deep! Somehow, you are able to drag out more of the "human condition" than most! 'Love your stuff!

Love ya!

I'm not sure about those comforts of old age. The older I get, the harder it is for me to get comfortable. I also think our passions keep pushing us onward toward new things and experiences. When we lose the passion for life, it's over.

Nicely expressed, John. I resonated with your second verse. Read it three times. Thanks for sharing. Well done. Peace... r
