YOUNG AND OLD

By John Herlihy

The young blessed with endless days,

The old crotchety and set in their ways.

The young are untouched, free of care,

The old battered in, little future to spare.

The young see future in their every road,

The old tread softly, considerably slowed.

The young meet the day with a fresh start,

The old get up feeling ready to break apart.

To be untouched by the history of their lives,

The young take their destiny in huge strides.

The old awaiting the knock on death’s door,

The young race around and tear up the floor.

The young so wildly impatient to come of age,

The old now happily content to become sage.

The young understand the moment as timely,

The old understand the moment as timeless.

So many truisms in this write, John! Your words should be written in a manual for life! Serious!

So much wisdom in this poem. You certainly do have a knack for making poems that have striking physical structure like this one as well.

While I have accepted the ravages of my paralysis combined with age, my mind refuses to get old. I still want to experience the freedom and openness of my youth. It's just a bit harder to get others to go along with me anymore… Like it always was.

A nice comparison between young and old, but I'm not sure about the last two lines. The older I get, the more I feel the weight of time, never knowing when my time will come to an end.

Absolutely love is wonderfully written and sagely shared piece about the young and the old, which every single one of us can relate to. Oh, this is the experience of life shaped in one beautiful poem.

Thanking you for your wonderful mind dear John. _/|\_
