- Her Last Refuge -

By John Herlihy

- - - - -

I was her first refuge,

Young, we fell in love.

But what did it mean?

We just called it that.

A shine in my apple,

A flower to my bee.

Shadow of my light,

Her love was a trust.

My heart a sanctuary,

‘Til we fell out of love.

- - - - -

I was her only refuge,

Nowhere else to go.

Nowhere else to flee,

Just lone little old me.

Came to me at times,

The middle of the night.

As a wave on a beach,

My good will to beseech.

She knew I was there,

A refuge from despair.

- - - - -

I was her last refuge,

With nowhere to go.

Nowhere else to flee,

Nowhere else but me.

Shoulder where to cry,

A place where to rely.

I will be here for you,

You came, you knew.

We never knew love,

But trust we did know.

- - - - -

I know of the love you speak. Sometimes we love this way because this is all we have or all we know. It doesn't make love bad, only different.

Sometimes, trust is everything, John. It's better than anything, I believe. If this is about some babe leaving you.......sad for her!! Hugs!!

Love ya!

I see how you seem to mean that it was not real love from her side, but she just needed somebody in that time, and you were the only one. At least she trusted you. It feels melancholic though, and the subtle complaint of the lack of real love shines through, bittersweet. It's enjoyable, and a beautiful, crafty poem.

A beautiful and enigmatic dedication to the mystery of love and the many ways it is felt, shared and cherished. Really enjoyed this, John.

Another biographical clue? There's something I've learned over the years (in my at times fraught life)... you can't let your happiness depend on something you may lose. Trust is the foundation of all good things between people. C. S. Lewis postulated: "There are far better things ahead than any we leave behind." For me personally this has proven true. Thanks for sharing. Enjoyed your thoughts. r

Ah, your words ring true for many. Trust is at the epitome of love, and love at the doorstep of trust. I love your poetry , have a wonderful day dear John.
