-- Just Waiting --

By John Herlihy

The light shone down thru pillow clouds,

With the look and feel of warm honey,

The spider web threaded as a maze overhead,

Finely Interlaced between tree branches,

The threads of lace held perfect symmetry,

When it caught my eye, I simply stared,

Compelling it was there in the light,

In shadow it wouldn’t be seen.

Alas, the spider wasn’t at home,

Beads of dew had taken up residence,

They even had rainbows inside,

Also, remnants of a transparent wing,

Left-overs no doubt with rough edges,

It too shone in the warm light,

Spiders always have the look about them,

As if waiting for someone or something to arrive

I lay on the ground, as a spider waiting,

I have been waiting in my time,

Waiting to get big, to grow up,

Waiting to mature, to grow old,

I too am an intricate web,

Delicate in its markings,

What am I now waiting for,

I know, but don’t want to say,

Like the spider: Just waiting,

Amid dewdrops filled with rainbows,

HOW OFTEN NATURE CATCHES THE ATTENTION AND DRAWS ONE TO A PRECIPICE OF ...WAITING...FOR WHAT THEY KNOW WILL SURELY COME. THIS HAPPENS ESPECIALLY WITH THE AGED, THOSE LOOKING FOR THE ANSWERS...PERHAPS, ADDITIONAL CLARITY AND PEACE THAT THEY FEEL CAN ONLY BE ATTAINED IN ANOTHER REALM, AS IF THEY'VE ACCOMPLISHED EVERYTHING THEY COULD HAVE HERE ON EARTH AND DESIRE A BETTER, OR SHOULD I SAY...AN ELEVATED, PLACE. I GUESS WITH ME IT'S...KNOWING THAT THE TIME FOR MY CHANGE OF RESIDENCE IS NOT IN MY HANDS SO I DESIRE NOTHING AND LOOK FORWARD TO EVERY NEW DAY THAT 'HE' GIVES ME. I'M LIVING, DOING WHAT I DO, KNOWING THAT I AM GOD'S INSTRUMENT AND WILL GO ON BEING SO UNTIL 'HE' CALLS ME HOME. LIANA JUST SHARED A WONDERFUL NEW WORK, ENTITLED 'OCEAN' IT ALSO SPEAKS OF ONE 'WAITING' TO BE TAKEN. I'M LIVING, I'M PRESSING ON...I'M GOOD TO GO FOR AT LEAST ANOTHER HMMMM...25 YEARS OR SO? I'M LAUGHING, JOHN, AND I HOPE YOU ARE TOO. BUT REALLY, I'LL SAY IT AGAIN, I'M NOT DONE YET AND I DON'T KNOW WHEN I WILL BE...I'M LIVING! THANKS FOR SHARING, MY FRIEND. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

I never thought of spiders as patient with their crawly legs scurrying past. But they must have the patience to spin the web and wait. Mother nature at its best. We can do no wrong comparing ourselves to one of her creations.

Rather eloquent, John. Your symbolism here is quite excellently expressed. A subject that another literary person once used, long ago, to refer to a similar (but ineluctable) disapprobation (paraphrased and reinterpolated, perhaps poorly, 'Waiting for the event which dare not speak its name...'). Rhyming considerations apart, I very much enjoyed this one.

Cool write, especially so since I like spiders and their webs.

An insightful message, John. "Amid dewdrops filled with rainbows," Imagery with layers. Dewdrops have always been a source of spiritual and artistic inspiration for me. They are bounded or limited in magnitude or temporal extent, but they still reflect everything around them. Kind of like us. Well done. Peace... rlc
