--- LITTLE FEARS --–

John Herlihy

Even if not ready to admit they know,

Everyone soon realizes what they drag in tow.

Fear of heights, of water, or lurking shadow,

Fear of closed spaces, dragonflies in a meadow.

With no clear name, fear hides within as a ghost,

Roaming rooms of the mind as an uninvited host.

I knew a mountain man who valued most being brave,

But allergic to a tiny ant, he ran away like a scared knave.

Fear of crowds, fear of loneliness, fear of soulful solitude,

Whether alone or among numbers, some seek plenitude.

The crack of the whip, the breaking apart of winter ice,

The sudden blast of a gunshot makes some feel like mice.

Do not exult too much about your feelings of being bold,

The day may come when your little fears will finally be told.

A wonderful review of what constitutes fear. I find that fearing dragonflies in a meadow is quite a stretch. I am more fearful of angry bees that are about to sting me or sting me by surprise. When I think about all the possibilities of fear in my life I don't seem to have that emotion, only being shy of large crowds that I would try to speak to in my youth. But one does stand out. When someone grabs you by your shirt so tightly that it is choking you, fear rushes to your mind in an instant. Fortunately, when that happened, I wrenched free and ran, avoiding being beat up by three angry, heartless fools.

We all have little fears, it's learning how to control them. The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

Your words remind me of a discussion about "fears" that was had at a gathering recently. Fear is real and whether one is born with certain fears or fears life has taught us. I really got into this poem, John!

Love ya!

THIS is one hundred percent, absolutly correct, John. We have all been there (bragdocius) and (fearful) . . . We tend to brag about the former, and hide the latter. I loved this write
