--- When We Sleep --–
By John Herlihy
What happens when we sleep, I wonder,
The body stays behind in gentle slumber,
A dreamy witness finds residence in the mind,
As the soul wanders ancient paths as if blind.
Held tenderly by a thread on its mystery tour,
Morning light beckons back the soul with its lure.
We experience the little death but once a day,
In preparation of the final moment, the divine ray.
When we no longer wake up, or perhaps we do,
The earth receives our body, the soul as a bird flew.
A solar wind lifts the bird to a new awakening,
The old life left behind with little forsaking.
Whatever you believe, life as we know it dissolved,
The secret finally revealed, the mystery resolved.

NOTE: My grandfather (my mom's dad) went to sleep one night and he never woke up the following day, and I was waiting, and waiting for him to wake up. I didn't know what was happening until my grandmothers (I had several of them. My grandfather had 6 wives, but only 4 was alive when I was a young girl) all cried, but didn't tell me what was wrong. They scolded me and questioned me why I didn't cry for my grandfather because he loved me so much. Yet, no one, absolutely no one, would tell me exactly what was going on with my grandfather, I had to find it out by myself and it tore my heart apart by the time I gradually died inside too. Sometimes, the adults forgot to console the young ones and left them to seek the heartbreaking truth for themselves.
Great poem, John!
