-- Window with a View -–

John Herlihy

I always consider a view as a treasure,

A way to fill my soul in equal measure.

So much of what we see seems sordid,

Even our gloomy thoughts feel morbid.

I see the sunrise as if it will never rise,

On that day, I do see it with inner eyes.

I see the horizon as twilight descends,

As the light dims, I hope it never ends.

Not every beach needs powdery sands,

Paddy fields terraced in distant lands.

Skylight streaks on in streaming rays,

Moonlight glistens upon shadow bays.

An eagle airy perched on ragged cliffs,

Strong wind turns flakes to snow drifts.

I walked across a boundless savannah,

Breath taken by the infinite panorama.

Desert winds upon shifting sands sigh,

Overhead, teeming stars in a dark sky.

Just give me a window with a fine view,

Tinted by white snow and morning dew.

What a lovely poem about how important windows are. The ever-changing natural world outside of Windows is a source of inspiration and contemplation. Not having a window is like living in a dungeon or prison. I find that so many put window coverings on all their windows so that they can't see out. Perhaps afraid that someone will see in. Except for the dead of winter, my windows are all free of obstruction so I can watch the natural promise taking place in my backyard and front yard.

Your last line reminded me of all the times my windows were tinted with frost.

A pleasing collection of imagery. Reminds me of a quote by singer/songwriter Bill Withers: "I feel that it is healthier to look out at the world through a window than through a mirror. Otherwise, all you see is yourself, and what is behind you." Enjoyed your thoughts. Peace... rlc
