-- Where We Stand -–

John Herlihy

We poets never really know where we stand,

The writing of every poem feels like quicksand.

With the scraping of the pen, the heart flutters,

To fly free, with the sweet chirping a bird utters.

The poem is finally set loose, there in crystal air,

Penning the words has felt much like a prayer.

Yet, lingering doubts always come forth at will.

Is the poem worthy? Does any perfume linger still?

I laid my red stylus down and at once sensed a hush,

I remember standing at a window, feeling the rush.

Is this the last poem? Will I ever write another one again?

The soul searching, the misty words, of where and when.

There, at an open window with a view, I continue to stand,

In the distance, my muse smiles and offers me her hand.

BRAVO, INDEED! ONCE A POET...FOREVER A POET. AND I MIGHT SAY, THERE WILL BE TIMES WHEN THE MUSE MAY NOT ALWAYS BE THERE WAITING, BUT, THEIR RETURN IS A SURETY! SO ENJOYED, THANK YOU, JOHN. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

Nice, but I usually know clearly where I stand. I'll also not compromise my views for the beauty of a poem. When I was young that was different, I was stupid and ignorant. Now I know what a good name means. I love your expertise though.

Your words have restored my faith in my muse, John! Yes! I LOVE that last line so much, hon!

Love ya!

From one poet to another, I enjoyed "Where We Stand."

What makes this so interesting is how revealing it is about you. I've always found it intriguing how dissimilar so many are in the way they view the process of poetic construct. For instance: I always know where I stand when I'm writing, or composing. The process never feels like quicksand to me, it feels more like I'm clawing in the muck to find a gem. Enjoyed the insight John. All the best... rlc
