-- The Mystery of Eternity -–
John Herlihy
God is impossibly quiet,
Like the quietude of falling snow.
Never to inspire any disquiet,
Never to confirm what we already know.
God is a quiet as a mouse,
Leaves behind mysterious traces.
In haunted rooms of the house,
We feel him in everyday places.
God is more lightning than thunder,
Silent light followed by sound.
His quiet presence inspires wonder,
He is everywhere all around.
God moves as quietly as the fog,
That crawls like velvet across the fields.
His spirit does our fears rob,
As our love for Him quietly yields.
And yes, the sky itself ever so quiet,
And never inspires any dread.
The blue of day, the black of night reliant,
Heaven’s awning always there overhead.
The quiet of God is everywhere,
In sunlight, in starlight, behind clouds.
With our eyes, we see nothing and only stare,
Our thoughts wrap us up in shrouds.
Better that God is quiet,
Our responsibility is to discover and know.
Not to remain always defiant,
Preventing the secret of ourselves to grow.
God will never appear,
From behind His mask of mystery.
Just to satisfy the eye and the ear,
To give away the mystery of eternity.

You speak of eternity, but then write about God's silence. I tend to accept eternity as a concept that has little place in our very short lives on a very short-lived planet. So, I have to think big. Not that I am God, but that I can shape the future, knowing it to some degree, and all indications are that I will have to move out into the solar system without much of God's help, because one day a calamity will come to earth that will destroy everything that we humans have built and torn down, rebuilt and torn down again so many times. To seek permanence, we will have to leave the earth and become gods of our own making, traveling further into the universe than we ever thought, probably never reaching infinity or eternity.
