-- What Bottom Looks Like --

By John Herlihy

I know what the bottom looks like,

And I am not sure I like what I see.

I know what the bottom feels like,

As I glance around, can this be me?

How did I get here and who to ask?

I wonder as no one seems to know.

On my list as a challenge and task,

As if I sat shivering in freezing snow.

I do surprise myself by what I forget,

Memory gone that once held breath.

But one memory lives with no regret,

How I rose up once again using heft.

A touch of misery or a touch of hope,

As we climb back that slippery slope.

My heart bleeds for the downtrodden,

Let a ray of hope their vision broaden.

Don't think I have yet to hit rock bottom, and to be honest, I hope I never do. I don't deal well with physical pain and know for a fact that the mental pain that would come from hitting the very bottom of life, would most likely drive me to suicide possibly jumping off the brink...-e-

That was a tough write. I'm not sure I know what the bottom looks like. At my lowest after being paralyzed, I was fully taken care of by my parents farmhouse where I spent nine months with a warm bed and three squares, no questions asked. I even loaned my parents money to buy a car. And was focused mostly on getting back college that fall, even though I didn't know how I was going to do it. My hand splint and a federal rehabilitation program funds, made that possible.

So when I see someone on the street at the bottom. I see someone without some support, soon to die. But fortunately, unlike when I was in Cairo, with millions of refugees in the streets, we don't see people dead in the streets here in the USA like I did there.

A FINE INSPIRATIONAL PIECE. ONE HAS TO HAVE BEEN AT THE BOTTOM TO SPEAK ON IT AND, AS LONG AS THERE IS LIFE, THERE IS HOPE....EVEN AT THE BOTTOM. THANKS SO MUCH FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+ INSPIRATIONS
