 -- HUMMINGBIRD --

By John Herlihy

You have finally showed your face,

I thought you would never arrive.

Breathless, as at the end of a race,

While I am feeling a little revived.

Stay for a while, but do not be still,

As a humming bird in my dreams.

You do come of your own free will,

Life suddenly becomes as it means.

Fan your wings to linger for a while,

I need you now, I need you to stay.

Your humming perfection has style,

Whatever happens, do not fly away.

My heart weary; I am feeling morose,

Hummingbird, hummingbird, stay close.

Where we live in SoCal these profoundly beautiful little guys are abundant. An interesting fact about them is that they have the fastest heartbeat of any animal in God's creation. At rest: 250 bpm. During flight: 1300 bpm. Yikes. An interesting shape for a sonnet John. Enjoyed your thoughts. r

I enjoy hummingbirds. We have a feeder hanging outside a window, and it's just amazing to watch them.
