-- A QUIET MOMENT --

By John Herlihy

 

There it is. It finally happened.

I never saw it coming, never reckoned.

Memories as echoes, lost in retreat

Have now become part of my own heart beat.

 

The four directions of the compass beckoning.

Four compass destinations there for the selecting.

Millions of moments flown as birds every which way,

The moment of convergence finally having its say.

 

The four points of the compass converge as one;

Its fated course now complete in a life fully spun.

I imagined it a thousand times, believed it, lived it;

When I saw it, I knew I would feel it the rest of my life.

 

The peace of snow, of stars, reaching down from above;

The peace of a heart after turmoil, the peace of a dove.

The one moment with no need for any atonement;

There it is, it finally happened, a quiet moment.

Except for those of us who've reached that golden part of our lives when recollection and reflection occupy a great deal of our waking hours, there is a pervasive void in the younger years, a perception of time's value and rewards as it's ticking slows. You have captured it well here. Very identifiable.
