-- MY FATE AWAITIN’ --

By John Herlihy

Here I am just a-rumblin’ along, my fate awaitin’,

Lonesome dove aflutter and my heart a-breakin’.

Always pointed there in the direction of my desires,

Head spinning in a fog, my mind full of crossed wires.

There before me not some pearly but broken-down gate,

Another toll road to travel while heaven beyond can wait.

Doesn’t much matter now to end up one place or another,

Always a stranger around to become a new-found brother.

Remembering the sad merry-go-round music of my youth,

Me with a head chuck full of cobwebs, still feelin’ uncouth.

Here I am, sleepin in some country wagon on a bed of burlap,

Good old fate humming in my heart where it contentedly sat.

The wagon rigger turned and asked: “You going somewhere?”

My voice of fate replied, “just going, will eventually get there.”

A SOLITARY LIFE, IS A LONELY LIFE BUT NO MATTER HOW FAR OR WIDE ONE ROAMS, IT IS VERY SAD THAT, AFTER ALL IS SAID AND DONE, ONE DOESN'T 'KNOW' WHERE ONE IS GOING, OR WHAT'S UP AHEAD. INDEED, IT IS SO SAD NOT TO CLAIM THAT FINAL FATE THAT COULD AWAIT THEM...AN ETERNAL HOME. WELL DONE AND THANKS. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

A day at a time. Fun parlance in this. IMO there's a mountain man pioneer type in every writer. Thanks for sharing... r

Isn't life grand? Full of adventure, which this work nicely symbolizes. Your last line, "just going, will eventually get there" makes me think that you've learned the lesson behind the saying, "You want to make God laugh? Tell him your plans!" Wouldn't life be boring if it always went according to plan?

Some mixed metaphor here. Just as Michael has alluded to, life's journey nearing its end without any clear destination. On the other hand, most wagon trains westward had a definite conclusion in mind. One they had heard about or read about in the newspapers. So they were able to liquidate all they had in order to join a wagon train headed towards that particular destination. Confident in the beginning that they would get there, but having second thoughts along the way.

But you certainly don't have any cobwebs when it comes to writing poetry. Another brilliant construction, not only physically but metaphorically. As I read, that haunting tune from the Sons of the Pioneers, Cool Water, kept popping into my head.

we'll all get there eventually. Some sooner than others. Just keep on keepin' on.
