-- Christmas Poem --
John Herlihy
I love wrapping presents,
And this poem is a gift.
On Christmas day I do present,
This poem your heart to uplift.
Before it was even written,
The poem was already there.
My heart was already smitten,
The poem still to write, do I dare.
Dare I do, as I take the plunge,
All my holy sentiments to expunge.
Expunge from the void into open air,
My heart bleeds, but not from despair.
The gift opened, the ribbon thrown away,
Your heart uplifted on this Christmas Day.

Likewise for me back in the day when I turned off everything to drive a thousand miles or more through ice and snow to get to a friendly warm place with lots of holiday cheer, only to return after January 1 to the reality of work.
Unlike you, I can't turn off my creativity and continue with my daily lifestyle exactly the same right through all of the holiday festivities, taking only a little time off to view things like the Rose Bowl where Wisconsin will be playing again in sunny Pasadena, barring fires, floods, mudslides and earthquakes. Once again, I am faced with the lengthy process of my annual letter (in lieu of a Christmas card) that has now a very dwindling audience as a result of Facebook and deaths on the recipients' list.
Happy holidays to you!
