-- One More Goodbye --

John Herlihy

Goodbye he thought, but he did not say.

No more room left in his heart for goodbye.

Goodbye he thought, with no other way,

The look in his eyes, as wind with a sigh.

We take our leave, knowing this the end.

Yet, we say nothing, our mood to betray.

Every muscle, very fiber alert to pretend.

This departure happens on just another day.

Goodbye isn’t goodbye, like freedom isn’t free.

We use these words as if we feel at a loss.

Not knowing what to say, blind even if we see.

Our freedom a turgid river impossible to cross.

One more goodbye will be one more too much.

A finger on my lips will call silence with a touch.

ONE TRIES TO AVOID THE FINALITY OF SAYING, 'GOODBYE'...EVEN IF IT IS, JUST THAT. FINE WORK, ENJOYED. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

As your poem points out, the maxim of goodbye representing a certain kind of permanency is one I personally try to avoid, choosing instead to say either "later" or "see ya" or "stay well." Of course, that's just personal. Your carefully chosen words make the point well and reminds us of how importance the thought is. Well done.

We sometimes know when it is the last time when goodbye is forever. Makes me remember as I left my mother back in 2012, she started to cry. I asked her why she was crying, and she said, "I will never see you again." Although I did, twice, manage to see her face-to-face on her iPad, she didn't acknowledge it as something she wanted to do. On February 14, her worrisome thoughts of 2012 came true.

I hate good byes. I've had far too many in my life. But they are an inevitable part of living so it's better to accept than to resist.
