John Herlihy

 

Ah to be unloved, so very terrible,

Ah to be loved, so much a miracle.

The meaning of love, what mystery,

The release of love, what liberty.

The knowledge of love lets us see,

The feeling of love will set us free.

If I were loved, no fear takes hold,

If I find love, my heart turns bold.

Without love, what can I withstand,

With love, I accept every reprimand.

Once I was not loved, I was lost,

Now that I am loved, I am found.

With love, I need nothing spare,

To love, what can anything compare.

Listen, I hear the song of a bird,

Sweetest song of love ever heard.

Love of any kind that is pure of heart is to be desired and cherished. This must be one of your loveliest poems.

With your phrasing and paradoxical structure, one is compelled to focus on the fact that without self-love, there is no willingness to give love... mostly from the same fear that imprisons the act of freely exercising self-love. Dare one say, all other forms of nature don't struggle with such a fear... especially fowl of the earth.
