-- Some Things We Never Forget --

John Herlihy

Some things will linger we never forget,

Bound together with feelings of regret.

One’s first love always stays a treasure,

One’s wedding day always gives pleasure.

A childhood betrayal of one’s best friend,

A memory you take with you to the end.

The sudden death of one’s favorite teacher,

Hell and brimstone of the church preacher.

In forgetting, we have no sense of missing,

But we never forget that certain blessing.

Just as night rudely sweeps twilight aside,

Remembering cannot our forgetting abide.

I will never ever forget my mother’s love,

She taught me to fly with wings of a dove.

AS FAR AS THE FORM AND PHRASES ARE CONCERNED, I LOVE THIS WORK, IT'S WONDERFUL, JOHN. BUT YOU KNOW I ALWAYS GO BEYOND THE FORM AND PHRASES AND LOOK AT THE MESSAGE. AND THERE IS, LIKE EVERYTHING, A POSITIVE AND A NEGATIVE ABOUT THIS IDEA. SOME THINGS, INDEED, WE SHOULD NEVER FORGET... OTHERS, WE SHOULD FORGET, BUT DON'T. THE MIND DOESN'T JUST HOLD ON TO GOOD MEMORIES, BUT TO THE BAD AS WELL. AND IT'S NOT EASY TO LET GO OF(FORGET)SOMETIMES, BUT FOR OUR OWN PEACE...VERY NECESSARY. INDEED, THIS WE SHOULD NOT FORGET. THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

There are so many things that I'd like to forget, and things, I'm sure, I'd love to remember. Why, I wonder, is it that I'm more prone to remembering the bad than I am the good?

Beautiful as always. Now you mirror this poem with one about the things we'd like to forget but can't.

Nice ending tribute to your mother. I believe that there are events in our lives that happen occasionally that are "sealed" in our long-term memory by our minds going over and over what just happened or something that tends to repeat, like every Sunday, with each iteration reinforcing what was learned the last time. So either like repetitious practice that makes our skills strong, and/or shocking events that permanently place a long-term "picture" on our minds, we develop strong memories of even the distant past of our lives.
