-- The Sound of the Soul --

John Herlihy

The five senses can be – are – prodigious,

Cups to be filled in many unexpected ways.

One by one, they perform a duty religious,

Giving insights that only a sense conveys.

The eyes capture all the world’s splendor,

Every image as a miracle in its own sight.

The ears listen to melodies most tender,

Music of the spheres - soothing as night.

We taste all the fruits in earth’s garden,

The nectar of honey, grapes on the vine.

Touch caresses without asking for pardon,

Thrilling the house of a body that is mine.

What of the rare experience we call soul,

That escapes the five senses, yet is ours.

One last piece of puzzle to make us whole,

To turn time in our world to eternal hours.

Plagued by a soul not envisioned thru sight,

Outside sight’s view in a place unreachable.

Which of the senses have sufficient insight,

Soul, where art thou, in a realm unthinkable?

The tinnitus of the ear but a sound of the soul,

The awesome ringing of the spirit in the ears.

Burrowed deep within as an invisible mole,

Whose eerie feelings can move us to tears.

And then we hear finally an echo and a word,

The sound of the soul, the melody sings pure.

Throughout day and night, the song of a bird,

Its fingers on heart strings miseries to endure.

How sweet the melody to hear the soul’s sound,

Wafting through our lives with its indelible mark.

The adagios and fortissimos sounding all around,

We need only to open our minds and listen, hark.

The sound of the soul at times tender, at times dim,

We live in a challenging world where put to the test.

Our good deeds in counterpoint to the evils of sin,

As either lyric or dirge, the soul always knows best.

Woven into our lives lies all those soul rhythms,

Anointing us in so many ways of clarity and light.

Just as we see the world thru the eyes of prisms,

The sounds of the soul give fresh vision to our sight.

Indeed, we need the presence of our soul to fully appreciate all that our senses tell us. Our soul provides proof that we live.

We think, therefore we are. I view this as the essence of the soul. While people have been taught through myth and literature that we have five senses, anyone who has studied the operation of the human body at any length will discover many more.

For instance, the body's ability to sense position, particularly in reference to gravity, is essential for us to be able to balance and move in the right direction when our eyes tell us where we want to go, or even just our brains when we can't see or look where we may be reaching. Another sense is the sense of hot and cold on our skin. And the sense of hot and cold internally in our bodies, both prompting action to ward off serious consequences.

The brain has its own ability to sense. That sense is the primary soul. The one that conjures up visions and ideas. The one that gives us passion and pain and poets' writing points.

so well written, unfortunately that sound of tintinitus only makes me miss just a moment of preceived silence that can never be heard again...oh for the sounds of silence...

"Just as we see the world thru the eyes of prisms," That's an interesting notion John. Especially the 'we' in the sentence. Just who might that 'we' be? Humanity? You've chosen good imagery to support your premise here. Enjoyed. Thanks for sharing. rlc
