-- Seeing to See --

John Herlihy

In the everyday, I did very little seeing.

Images passed by, without seeing to see.

The mind blinded me to the truly visual.

Random thoughts made all images residual.

Much of the time we end up seeing without seeing,

Robbing as it were an essential part of our being.

I heard the hum of a bee, paid no attention to its sight.

Ignoring daytime wonders, it might as well be night.

Look thru an inner window, then all comes into view,

Blue sky, puff clouds, the butterfly I intimately knew.

I see as the blind see, thru the lens of the inner eye;

I hear as the deaf hear, thru the echo of an inner sigh.

In an inner room with a view, I will create new worlds,

From falling snow to autumn leaves, all God’s pearls.

Blinded for so long, I had forgotten how to see to see,

Seeing to see a dust mote between the light and me.

I love the gentle beauty of this poem. It has a certain child-like sense of wonder about it that I find enchanting.

Still Living on my Feet is the follow up to Tichaona Chinyelu’s first book, In the Whirlwind, which was rooted in a sense of hard-hitting revolutionary black love. However, in this sophomore effort, Tichaona brings the revolutionary essence from deep
