- When We Cease to Dream --
John Herlihy
When we cease to dream,
What will be left to imagine?
When we give up the impossible,
What will be left to fathom?
When we no longer know who we are,
What will be left of who we might be?
When we no longer see the invisible,
What will be left to see?
When we no longer know what we think,
What will be left of what we can do?
When we no longer desire what we want,
What will be left of what we knew?
When we no longer hear the inaudible,
What will be left to hear?
When we no longer appreciate taste,
What will be left but a tear?
When we no longer feel another’s touch,
What will be left of the caress?
When we no longer recognize our sin,
What will be left to confess?
When the Spirit sings sweetly,
The whole universe stands in display.
If the Spirit ever ceases to dream,
Heaven and Earth will pass away.

I have lost feeling in a good part of my body. A lovely caress of those parts brings varied responses to my brain: I might feel nothing. I might feel burning. I might feel sharp pain. I might feel dull pain. I have even found that a gentle caress can be very irritating like ants biting. Giving me a far different dream than someone with full feeling on their skin.
And I have lost some of my hearing. That can be very frustrating when trying to converse with someone that has a very light voice or a certain accent or tone that I don't pick up well. My dreams are not enhanced by gibberish.
