-- Silent Night --
John Herlihy
The day follows me into the dark night,
A shadow that thinks it has all the right.
Day’s chaos tries to enter night’s room,
Twilight tempers day’s entry into gloom.
Night premonitions may the heart scare,
As mind receives signals beware, beware.
Then night is upon us with its hush, hush,
The crescent moon limps upward in blush.
Wrapped into its arms with night as host,
My fears slip away with this pale ghost.
Broken voices echo in the listening hours,
Until eerie quiet, all night sound devours.
One star’s solitude is a spectacle of light,
I now know the meaning of silent night.
