-- Ordinary Love --

John Herlihy

Ordinary love can never be ordinary;

Somehow it ends up being extraordinary.

To be true to itself, it is always on edge;

Its commonality ends up being a pledge.

Fleeting love lives in the moment’s desire;

Hearts enjoined as in a passing brush fire.

Passionate love has fiery embers that burn;

Two hearts locked together will always yearn.

Ordinary love finds its depth in simple things;

The understanding and compromise life brings.

In happiness and sorrow, such love holds true ;

Keeping in sweet memory all the lovers knew.

Love should never be identified as just ordinary;

In preserving its course, it shines extraordinary.

Ordinary love is made up of extraordinary things, including all the things mentioned here. The fiery passion at the beginning will give way to the bright embers that burn banked through the years. No, there is no true "ordinary" love. Only love that burns.

Sad that so many misidentify love as only realized through the bed, or nowadays, hookups in public restrooms. This is a giant poem for such kind to read and reassess. Well-spoken, John. Very well-spoken.
