-- To Be What You See --
John Herlihy
One brief moment, to be what you see,
As if wrapped contentedly in the shade.
A deep descent into nature, losing myself,
Soon beginning to feel light, weightless.
As bright as light and as airy as smoke,
I am light rays streaming from the sun.
In dusk, shadows falling across the land,
Darkness turning everything into night.
I am moonlight shimmering as moonglow,
The light as dew dust on leaf and pond.
I fall into the ageless wonder of the stars,
As the silence of outer space descends.
To witness midnight in the eye of night,
To see, to be, till blindness of daylight.

I have felt that way myself, particularly at night outdoors. Something primal draws me there to experience the light and sounds that come with the night and moonlight. Unlike others who fear the dark, I find it warm and comforting, especially in summer when the nights are truly warm.
