-- The Hope Candle --

John Herlihy

It’s a funny thing, hope.

It creeps upon us unawares,

Sits there on the horizon content,

Uninvited, yet as if it belongs.

Like a perfume that insinuates itself,

Filling our days with its sweet thoughts.

A mirage putting ideas into our heads.

A flickering candle burning on hope’s wick

A Christmas stocking on the mantle piece,

Filled with tangerines and peppermint sticks.

Promises to be kept, desires unfulfilled.

We call it hope when all else fails us.

Hope will keep us going, show us the way.

I am struggling to say what it is exactly.

We don’t really know what it means,

Until there is no hope there to be had.

Gone this brief, flickering candle,

With the power to illuminate worlds.

For years as I struggled with myself and the constant temptation to end my suffering, there was always in my mind's eye a vision of a candle, flickering with light that illuminated the path before me. As long as I kept it in sight I was able to follow, sometimes stumbling and other times crawling. And when I thought I'd lost it to the darkness, it would reappear to light my way once again.

WHETHER OR NOT OUR HOPE CANDLE REMAINS LIT IS COMPLETELY IN OUR HANDS. THE CANDLE IS ALWAYS THERE IN OUR HEARTS...WAITING FOR US TO LIGHT IT. AND I SAY WAITING BECAUSE WE, BEING HUMAN, WILL AT TIMES ALLOW THE WATERS OF 'LIFE' TO DOUCHE IT'S FLAME. BUT WE CAN RELIGHT OUR HOPE CANDLE AT WILL, AMEN. THANK YOU, JOHN. We need hope, even if we can't exactly know what it is. The energy of hope uplifts us, while its absence leaves us sinking fast. Good poem! I like it!

When all else has disappeared, Hope extends a
Kind encouraging hand to help us forward to
Better times…
A reassuring constant in these challenging times…

As always a carefully considered and beautifully
written piece…
