-- What Lies Within --
John Herlihy
In the arcane realm of silence
Lies the echoes of what remains unsaid.
In the silence of descending snow
Lies the peace that we wish to wed.
In the silence of the budding flower
Lies the erotic perfume of its bloom.
In the grand design of a feather
Lies the exquisite beauty of the plume.
In the silence of the emerging dawn
Lies the beginning of the new day.
In the silence of the twilight
Opens the door to night’s gateway.
In the tautness of a piano wire
Likes the beauty of a single note explored.
In the sounding of multiple notes
Likes the harmony of a thunderous cord.
In the uplifted arms of trees
Lies a prayer burning as eternal flame.
In the tumultuous oceans of the world
Lies a mist that turns into clouds, then rain.
In the lightness of the ocean air
Lies the salty brush of its breeze.
In the heaviness of its tidal flood
Lies surging waves the shore to seize.
In the presence of our guardian angels
Lies the voice of conscience that speaks.
In the foulness of the devil’s deeds
Lies a sickening scent that reeks.
In the space behind the eyes
Lie feathered songbirds come to rest.
In the shadows of inquiring eyes
Likes a lightness that shines as blessed.
In the tremor of the loved one’s voice
Lies the depths of a fathomless well.
In the shifting of night and day
Lies the perennial mystery of a mystic spell.
