-- Whale Road --

John Herlihy

The great humpback colossus of the waters,

Floats with the buoyancy of an elfin nymph.

Its eerie cry torches a thousand miles of night,

In a distant fathom of the deep, a cry echoes.

In fluid waters, whales a road of light see,

Sunlight in rays as moonlight luminescence.

Glittering pathways as if from heaven anointed,

The dim pathway of light in moonglow arrayed.

Black rivers of sperm whales as mythic beasts,

Roll like boulders through the undulating waters.

In pursuit of forces resulting from driving instinct,

Trails they pursue spread in the dark as moonstone.

No furrows form in the passage of the behemoths,

Only the breath of agitation shivers the sea in its wake.

As primordial relic of pre-history in ancient pathways,

They explore their watery environment in serene pursuit.

Periodically, they rise to the surface to breathe fresh air,

Through venting blowholes that spew misted breath.

Their colossal bulk suddenly as heavy as the earth,

As they crash back into the inviting waters, weightless.

For one brief moment, repeated throughout the night,

Sleeping whales hover at surface seemingly half awake.

Their bodies reflecting the copper glint of a one-eyed moon,

White-cresting waves alive in the remnants of night silence.

The glittering snake of the whale road coursing onward,

These shadow whisperers born to the rigors of the deep.

In serenity, they swim at peace thru aquamarine torrents,

Their beating heart ready to find where freedom lives.

Your last line is so apply placed as to give another layer of wonder to the life of whales. I couldn't help but flash back to the watching of a documentary that showed a whale nuzzling a scuba diver that had been pursued by several sharks. The whale in its intelligence and apparent connection with the diver, managed to assist the man back to his diving boat, shark attack abated. They are truly remarkable creatures. There was (perhaps still available on Animal Planet) a TV series "Whale Wars" that gave us 7 seasons of incredible effort to save the whales from Japanese killing.

That image looks like an Orca (the killer whale). And the Blue Whale is actually the largest mammal in the ocean. Your wonderful poem reminded me of the term paper (and an essay) I wrote in college on whales and dolphins, and also the Gray Whales that migrate yearly from Alaska down to Scammon's Lagoon (and several other lagoons) to mate in Baja Mexico. Thanx 4 sharing John. Enjoyed. r

Whales infiltrate this passage in all their forms. And I didn't know there was a "road" in the sea where whales follow. But their migratory routes would suggest that.

One thing that fascinates me about sperm whales, is that they died very deep to eat giant sperm whales that put up a fight from their suction scars on the sperm whales when they return with a full belly. While we are having a great deal of trouble finding them, giant squid are just ordinary food for sperm whales.
