-- Soft Clay Truths --

John Herlihy

All my soft clay truths rarely stick,

They make an impression with little glue.

Burning thru life’s tallow on a slender wick,

To belie all the truths that I really knew.

All the little half truths that amount to a lie,

Little white lies spoken to gain an advantage.

Exaggerated protests saying we would rather die,

Fooling us into thinking our words classic vintage.

Then all those promises that we make for tomorrow,

Promises that merely tetter precariously on the edge.

Breezy winds that blow, our words on borrow,

Only to be broken when we take back the pledge.

What about the miasma of the feelings we call love,

That stir in our hearts as ever-conflicting thought.

The emotion feels embracing, then feels like a shove,

Pulling petals from flowers, she love me, she loves me not.

Forget not all those instances when we only ourselves fool,

What we think we know better only ends up as a joke.

In such cases life seems to be unravelling on its spool,

While we make way through the world under its yoke.

There are days that arrive when I know what I want,

Telling myself little half-truths with their tender mercy.

That upon closer inspection, prove to be desires that taunt,

Even I see through the soft clay and can witness the pity.

We build images of ourselves that eventually break apart,

Medieval castles in the sand that amount to nothing.

Let’s get rid of these half truths and sweep clear the heart,

Then, when we look at ourselves, we see truly something.

THERE IS ONLY ONE WHO TRULY KNOWS US AND SEES US AS WE TRULY ARE...GOD. WE HARDLY KNOW OR SEE OURSELVES AS WE REALLY ARE. IN SHORT...WE ALL HAVE A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF 'SOFT CLAY TRUTHS' THAT WE GENUINELY DON'T SEE OR DENY. WONDERFUL SHARING. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU! LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

You've penned a poetic example of what might go through the minds of those conscious people out there deciding what they should change or alter for the new year. You've covered some very basic areas of consideration and done it well.

What a great poem!!! Look at it this way:

Our lives do change from time to time, each time we do believe it was for the better. No one, (not a single soul in this world) would think of changing for worse. We must credit ourselves that each time we have changed it was for the betterment of ourselves, and when we look into the mirror each day we can be proud of who we have become.

Yes, our lives is like the soft clay truths, we are still capable of moulding ourselves to be someone whom we wish to be... until the day we die we can say that we have had a life that we had truly lived to be ourselves and not that someone we didn't wish to be.

Never stop changing for the better!!!

Its good to break the illusion once in a while, and show ourselves by the mirror as we truly are, as I get older its getting easier to do, John, thank you for sharing this meaningful poem with me. :)

This is an idealism that all can aspire to. Being aware of our many flaws (in this fallen body) is important if it draws us closer to God. The most important thing (and for some the most difficult thing) is to be yourself despite the incompleteness. To be the best person you can be. Only let wisdom change that image you have of yourself. Bottom Line: No one on the planet is John Herlihy, except John Herlihy, and that's the beauty of it. Thought-provoking. Well done. rlc

I agree …but not so easy to achieve…
Our minds fool us into thinking one thing..
and we think we have cracked the code…
Only to have it snatched away on a whim…
Confusion ensues…
When we fall, we must rise again,
over and over until the jigsaw piece fits
comfortably…
